Dr David Skerrett-Byrne is a NHMRC Research Fellow with a dual position between Helmholtz Munich, Germany & The University of Melbourne. His scientific journey has taken him across 4 countries and through 6 diverse labs, starting in cancer research before he ended up, somewhat unexpectedly, exploring the fascinating world of crocodile sperm. Now, his research program centres around repositioning men to be active players in reproductive health, whether one wishes to have kids or not. For far too long, this responsibility of fertility has been disproportionately placed on women, who bear the majority of the health, emotional and financial burdens. His work spans development of male contraceptives, what determines healthy sperm, and exploring how a father’s life experiences can shape pregnancy and the health of the next generation through sperm epigenetics.
